I’m playing World of Warcraft since 2005 and created already a ton of costumes from WoW, Diablo, Overwatch or Heroes of the Storm. Yes, I love Blizzard’s art style and all the worlds, characters and stories the studio created. However, after building so many costumes with a reference, I finally wanted to create something based on my own ideas though. And believe it or not, but a little portrait from the Starcraft II collectors edition got me hooked! It was the tiny face of the Wizard from Diablo 3, wearing a golden headpiece and black braids inspired by the Protoss from Starcraft. The idea of the Protoss Wizard was born!
I’m honest though: I’m not good at designing something by myself. Therefore I struggled quite a lot to find the right direction and look for this costume. I’ve remade a few parts several times and especially the floaty wizard robe gave me headaches. After some trial and error I finally finished the costume in 2013. The armor was completely made with Worbla with tons of LEDs running threw every single piece. It was the first time I’ve worked with animated LEDs and I seriously had no idea what I was doing. Once I figured everything out, I was so excited though that I even built and additional staff that was inspired by World of Warcraft and Starcraft.
The grand finale of this project was then my trip to Blizzcon in 2013. I had a great time, participated in the costume competition and won even the Grand Prize! I’m incredible proud of this costume and still love it dearly until this day!
