I’m a massive fan of World of Warcraft and play the game already since 2005. I also did a lot of cosplays like the Tier 2 Paladin from the game in the past. So obviously I was very excited when Blizzard asked me to bring Xal’atath to life. Xal’atath has a deep lore and is just an amazing villain in the most current expansion The War Within. I think Xal’atath is actually one of the most beautiful designed characters in the World of Warcraft universe! And bringing her to life through a cosplay was incredibly fun!
I used mostly EVA foam to create the shoulder pieces, leg armor and bracers of the costume. My trusty Dremel was also a huge help to add all the details and textures. Afterwards all parts were primed with Flexbond and painted with acrylics and Vallejo airbrush colors. The robe was then made with a heavy wool fabric. We also used a fabric printing service to achieve the universe look of Xal’atath’s cape. The floating void orbs were obviously very tricky and we ended up using CGI for them. In total, me, my husband Benni, my wig artist @krystl_cosplay and our dear crafting support @ali_cosplay_props worked for 5 weeks on this costume. Getting ready and applying all the body painting and runes was also really time consuming and took around 4 hours.
I think the result is really convincing though! Benni and I are incredible proud of how the costume turned out and I think we got very close to the character reference. Xal’atath is a really awesome villain and it was super fun to cosplay her. Please check out the full making of video on our Youtube channel to see how the Xal’atath cosplay was made from scratch.
